Helloooo. Dave and I recently arrived home from Borneo where we were visiting our friends at Sun Bear Outreach. We didn’t get to the sanctuary where the enclosure we are helping to fund will be, but we do still have some updates for you.
So we will start with some GREAT NEWS. Whilst we missed our target to raise the remaining funds for this project to be fully funded – Sun Bear Outreach have been fortunate in finding some other donors and the enclosure can now go ahead as planned. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us while we have raised money for this project.
A site has been selected and construction is scheduled to start in September 2019. We will continue to donate to them until the end of 2019 and we will let you know what the next project we help to fund will be.
We’ve had a swap to the potential housemates in the new enclosure (if you want to read about the original bear housemates, check out our last blog). Hitam, who was originally going into the enclosure has been promised a home to herself because she is still suffering from issues due to the poor nutrition she received in her diet as she was separated from her mum at such a young age. Since she has been rescued, her diet has been adjusted but unfortunately she does still need extra care. With Hitam living in her own space, Fitri, will be joining the other 3 bears in the new enclosure. Fitri is a candidate for release back into the wild in future but she will live in the enclosure until her suitability for release can be determined.
To ensure a smooth transition into their new home, all the bears will spend time with each other to ensure they’ll be good roomies. Cora and Sunny have grown up together but Buddy has mostly been living the bachelor life in his own space. He is a little bigger than the other bears and there were concerns over how they would interact, especially since his claws had been removed before he was rescued.
Buddy and Sunny were introduced to each other and the team were happy to see that they got along well. They spent over half an hour with their paws wrapped around one another and chasing each other around.
While they wait for their enclosure to be built, the four bears are enjoying time in Learning Forest. Fitri likes to climb trees searching for ants while Buddy and Sunny chase each other around. Our little baby shy gal, Cora, will sit and watch the others.
We would never have been able to help fund this project without our amazing customers who have supported The Karma Collective this year. So I want to say thank you. Thank you for supporting Dave and I in this little adventure. Thank you for helping Sun Bear Outreach reach their goal. Thank you for helping to give these sun bears a better life. Without people like you, these things could not be achieved.
We will have more updated on the new project soon, so keep an eye out.
